Photograph of Rudolph Vogt, the father of the artist Joel Vogt.

These are photographic portraits showing the evolution in photographs of the paternal family of the artist, from his great-grandparents to his two boys. These portraits are period portraits and are all made by different photographers, not devoid of talent.
On the portrait of the grandfather of the artist we can appreciate the finishing with color pencil to improve a shape or add a burst of light in the eyes; long before Photoshop, the retouching of images existed already, and the portraits were often colorized by hand. This gallery is homage to the father of the artist.

The father passed away…
What a news,
A tribute to my dad.

Genealogy is a science that combines a sweet mix of emotion and search for origins. We're all more or less inclined to look into our past and the one of our parents to tell a story, to remember a moment, to share an old picture with our children. Joel Vogt has also made his way in his genealogy by depicting it through a photo album. This album redraws the evolution of the family from his great-grandparents to his two boys: A portrait of a family in its continuity, its memories, and its future.

With the pictures taken by different photographers, we travel through years and styles. We are surprised by the old sketched portraits, a manual finishing now transformed in digital technology, but nothing could replace it. The colors arranged by specific and mastered actions were used to enhance the inflexion of light and lines.

Evolution, this gallery is also a tribute to the father, whom the photo seems to be very contemporary because the lines of his face are so much similar to those of the son. Joel wanted this shared intimacy in order to get closer to the meaning of the portrait photography. This is a part of his work that shows his commitment to tradition and his privileged relationship with the art of portraiture.

Discover throw this gallery how five generations come up and keep always the same intensity in the eyes, the same determination. The artist exposes himself as he exposes his models. His history is now discovered: Inheritance and transcendence.
